Team ENERActive Sends Energy Waste to Penalty Box

With hockey season now upon us, Skylands Ice World can rest assured as fans, players, figure skaters, and coaches will enjoy their sport a bit more comfortably in new and improved energy efficient ice rinks. This 79,603 square foot ice center, with duel skating arenas located in Stockholm-NJ, underwent an Energy Assessment & Conservation Audit of the building and its integral systems within the New Jersey Office of Clean Energy, Pay 4 Performance Program – targeting facility optimization and energy cost reduction.

Through extensive analysis and evaluation, the Eneractive engineering team identified, highlighted, and subsequently implemented a number of significant Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) – with the Eneractive team commissioned for construction management services.

“Chris Bitters and Tom Szarawarski and the Eneractive Solutions team have rendered excellent and valuable service to my company. They identified scores of ways for us to conserve energy and improve our operation. They directed us through the complex process of obtaining state incentives and secured available funding.”     -Greg Brander, Owner of Skylands Ice World.

With efforts toward creating energy efficiency best practices at the ice center, Eneractive designed and then managed the implementation of all ECMs ranging from infrared ice temperature sensors and refrigeration controls to a low-emissivity (low-e) ceiling and energy efficient bi-level High Bay T8 Fluorescent lighting fixtures. Other ECMs included vending machine controls and occupancy sensors throughout. Particularly distinct, the installation of the low-e ceiling in conjunction with bi-level lighting, significantly limits the amount of radiated energy and heat that reaches the ice, resulting in definitive energy savings and an optimized facility. More specifically, the low-e ceiling will greatly aide in the reduction of chilled water plant refrigeration production as well as chilled water pumping. The heat that is otherwise kept in the new ceiling cavity created by the low-e ceiling installation is then dispersed to the outside openings of the ceiling over the audience areas, where it is actually needed. The new lighting system provides significant energy savings through its T8 bi-level technology and provides vast aesthetic improvements through a higher lamp Color Rendering Index (CRI) as well as a much improved uniformity of lighting at the ice surfaces.

Through all recommended measures, the Eneractive team identified potential annual savings of $103,000, with a simple payback of 4.05 years. Most impressive, however, is that post-implementation results of just a select few ECMs already represent actual electrical savings of both a 49% decrease in cost and 46% decrease in volume. Additionally, usages of both fuel and propane are down significantly, approaching approximately 30% in magnitude. Mr. Brander went on to state:

“…As a result of Eneractive Solutions' work on behalf of my company, we are a better managed company, more energy efficient, an improved consumer of power, and more profitable. We enthusiastically endorse their professionalism and encourage other business managers to investigate their capabilities. They really came through for my company.”

It’s a win/win for all – alongside reduction in energy consumption, ice hockey players and figure skaters are feeling the positive impacts as well, with a harder ice surface for skating and a more visible puck for scoring - the new season is off to a great start.

Eneractive Hosts First Ever Triathlon for the Special Olympics

Stemming from a shared commitment to community service and a collective passion for health and wellness, a vision of creating the first ever triathlon to benefit The Special Olympics became a reality on September 23, 2012. Our most remarkable philanthropic effort to date, “One More Tri” was truly a unique event, marking the first time that many Special Olympics athletes had the opportunity to participate in a triathlon, as well as the opportunity to partake in an open water swim.

As one may imagine, organizing a triathlon is no simple feat – but the ENERactive team – alongside our friends at Special Olympics NJ (SONJ) and Jersey Shore Multisport, not only developed a seamless event from scratch but created an unforgettable and profound experience for all involved. Through gracious efforts of employees, friends, family, racers, and local businesses, the triathlon enrolled over 270 athletes and 65 volunteers while raising over $60,000 for Special Olympics NJ… something quite extraordinary for a first-time event!

Proud and honored to assist and support the Special Olympics athletes of NJ, the team here at ENERActive actively stands behind SONJ’s mission to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type events for children and adults with intellectual disabilities – continuously creating opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with all.

One More Tri will be an annual event held at the end of the triathlon season – open to all athletes. If you would like to participate in next year’s event as a racer, sponsor, volunteer, or donor, send an email to charity@eneractivesolutions.com and you will be added to the One More Tri email list!

Innovative Cx Training

As part of an effort to address energy waste reduction in existing buildings and prepare commissioning professionals for the associated tasks ahead, ENERActive Solutions teamed up with the Building Commissioning Association (BCA), in collaboration with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), to provide a new and comprehensive Existing Building Commissioning Training Program for industry professionals.

Held in October, this 3-day collaborative training course involved teaching and guidance from established industry professionals from varying backgrounds, such as the BCA, NYSERDA, revered Commissioning Firms, and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. This comprehensive course covered the ins and outs of the entire existing building retro-commissioning process, with participants receiving:

• Thorough instruction on each phase of the existing building commissioning process, based on BCA's Best Practices

• Training by certified commissioning professionals with extensive industry experience

• Useful handbook that includes glossary of terms, BCA Best Practices and templates for use in the field

• Credit for class toward the Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP) certification, class counts as one qualified project

• 18 AIA/CES Learning Units

As part of the team that both developed and instructed this training program, Mr. Grosso stands behind the notion that a holistic view is imperative in assisting building owners and managers with maximizing the value in achieving optimum performance in their buildings. The training these participants underwent uniquely exposed them to concepts and exercises which we – here at ENERActive – believe will set them up for success as PlaNYC initiatives are implemented and the demand for proficient commissioning professionals rises.

Eneractive Solutions named number 24 on Forbes list of America's 100 most promising companies

ENERACTIVE Solutions (ENERACTIVE), an independent, full-service energy consulting, engineering, and project development company, announced today that their team has been ranked Number 24 on Forbes' 2011 list of America's 100 Most Promising Companies. The list features 100 privately-held up-and-comers with compelling business models, strong management teams, notable customers, strategic partners, and precious investment capital.

ENERACTIVE provides independently-tailored energy solutions for organizations seeking to reduce operating costs and improve environmental attributes through fiscally-prudent and socially-responsible initiatives.

In what is a competitive and vacillating business environment, ENERACTIVE's President and CEO, Dan Weeden, credits the success of the company to operating outside the bounds of traditional hierarchy and process, while maintaining a strong company culture for vision and technical excellence.

"We could not be more humbled or honored to receive this news," said Mr. Weeden. "This distinction punctuates the performance and effort of an amazing team of employees, each of whom bring unparalleled technical insight, unwavering commitment, and endless energy to their actions. These are the attributes that our clients have come to trust in moving them into the realm of responsible energy use."

And the list of clients continues to grow for ENERACTIVE. Johnson & Johnson, Princeton University, The Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the American Water Company are just a few of the companies who trust ENERACTIVE to bring them innovative energy-performance enhancements and new ways to achieve improved facility operations.

"Sizing up younger, privately held companies is hard: Their fortunes can change very quickly and there's a dearth of public data," says Forbes Executive Editor, Brett Nelson. "We took a more comprehensive approach to evaluate their health and potential."

As described on the Forbes web site concerning how they went about developing this year's list, Forbes sharpened their search by teaming up with CB Insights, a Manhattan-based data firm that tracks investments in high-growth private companies. With $650,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation, CB Insights developed a complex software called "Mosaic" that mines a myriad of online sources (from press releases and social networks to job boards and court filings) to come up with one, algorithmically-derived score that measures a private company's health (see http://www.forbes.com/sites/brettnelson/2011/11/30/how-we-selected-americas-most-promising-companies/ ). Forbes combined Mosaic's data-crunching technique with old-fashioned reporting to assemble a list of rising stars with bright growth prospects. Canoe Brook Water Treatment Facility gets power from innovative "floating" solar photovoltaic system

ENERACTIVE Solutions (ENERACTIVE), an independent, full-service energy consulting, engineering, and project development company, recently completed the installation of a 112 kW solar photovoltaic system on a floating racking system atop the reservoir at New Jersey American Water's Canoe Brook Water Treatment Facility located in Short Hills, NJ. By harnessing the power of the sun, this initiative is anticipated to generate 136,000 kWh of energy per year to help the plant treat and pump close to 40 million gallons of water per day to 78,000 homes within the municipalities in Essex, Union, Morris, and Somerset counties.

David Klockner, Vice President and COO at ENERACTIVE stated, "When considering the significant power required to purify, pump, and deliver tap water to homes 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it only made sense to design a more efficient energy-generating system that would conserve our client's working capital and our country's natural resources."

This project was originally initiated at the end of 2009 when ENERACTIVE was contracted by NJAW to conduct solar photovoltaic surveys on sixteen (16) of their water treatment locations. During the study it was determined that since many of their facilities contained large, remote reservoirs used in the water distribution system, these vast surfaces should be utilized to host a "floating" solar photovoltaic system. ENERACTIVE proceeded with the design and development of this innovative approach to energy production by creating a solar array that would float on an open body of water, with the rigor to endure the harsh weather conditions that are prevalent in the North-eastern, United States. ENERACTIVE President and CEO, Dan Weeden added, "This is an ingenious solution to a serious site constraint. Our team was able to formulate and implement a solar project where land and roof space was scarce. These are exactly the types of hand crafted solutions we love to bring to our clients".

Limited floating solar photovoltaic systems have been installed in warm-weather climates. These systems, however, have previously not been able to survive freeze/thaw weather cycles. ENERACTIVE was able to include a specialized docking system (manufactured by Poralu Marine), that contained floats filled with polystyrene, allowing them to withstand severe weather conditions. Even in the case of an unlikely puncture or failure, they will still float and can easily be maintained. This coupled with the creative underwater anchoring system (manufactured by Seaflex, Inc.) provided the stability needed for optimal performance of the solar array.

Suzanne Chiavari, Vice President of Engineering at New Jersey American Water, took a bold step by commissioning the engineers and consultants at ENERACTIVE to design and install this ground-breaking project. Ms. Chiavari noted, "While the Canoe Brook plant does not have a significant amount of open space, we wanted to examine an innovative solution that could be expanded or potentially used at other water facilities. We know the array will generate power, and are anxious to confirm that this new floating technique will be as maintenance-free as our other ground-mounted applications."

Over the next year, New Jersey American Water and ENERACTIVE will evaluate the performance of the array and the extent of maintenance required, and after one year of operation determine how they can expand the potential for this type of unique renewable energy system.

New Jersey American Water installed its first ground-mounted solar facility in 2005 and has added several since that time. They are currently installing three additional solar arrays with ENERACTIVE, however, this innovative floating system is a ground-breaking step for them.

The State of New Jersey has a progressive renewable energy program which provides incentives for alternative power projects and creates jobs. The 2009 Federal ARRA tax incentives (Stimulus Plan) along with the State of New Jersey SREC program make the installation of solar facilities in this state an attractive investment with a reasonable payback.

ENERACTIVE Solutions is an independent, full service energy engineering and project development company specializing in the analysis, design, development, and installation of energy efficiency and building infrastructure projects. ENERACTIVE leverages both traditional demand side strategies and innovative supply side initiatives to ensure optimum facility performance and lower operating costs.
